Orphan Care

Events such as natural disasters and regional conflicts leave their impact on local infrastructure, but the heaviest toll is paid by those children who are orphaned. In such traumatic circumstances where people are in survival mode, who looks after the welfare of the orphans?

There have been several situations where orphans are taken abroad, but in our opinion, in most cases, it is better to provide good quality care of them in their country of origin such that they maintain links with their extended family and can move into adulthood with more confidence of who they are and where they come from, but armed with the skills to thrive.

Humanity First’s Orphan Care programme is a long-term and well thought out plan which aims to provide shelter, education, clothing and a long-term future for these unfortunate children. The project has been running in many countries such as Burkina Faso, Benin, Sierra Leone, Pakistan, Indonesia and The Gambia for years. Due to the vulnerability of orphans in those circumstances, the security of these facilities is paramount, otherwise orphans become prey to predators.

A new orphanage is being built in Benin to accomodate 50 orphans. In some countries, HF is now trying a new concept of smaller 'family units' where a group of 5 or 6 orphans become a virtual family with a surrogate mother taking care of them. In this way, they build relationships and look out for each others welfare. Please help Humanity First to give them a future.
