Burkina Faso Handpumps
Water For Life
The Sahel region of north eastern Burkina Faso is very arid and hot, and is at the periphery of the Sahara desert. Nomadic tribes struggle with poor health due to limited access to water which is seldom clean.
Humanity First worked in partnership with IAAAE and Water Aid to refurbish 128 village water hand pumpsin 2007-08 at a time when 45% of local hand pumps were reported to be out of operation. The engineers had to clean and widen the existing boreholes, perform apron repairs, install new filters and pipes and repair the hand pumps themselves.
For isolated villages, this facility had a dramatic effect on improving health, especially amongst the children and older people.
