HF is providing support for farming communities to increase crop yields and income in The Gambia. This includes access to seeds, fertiliser, tools, fencing and on some occasions, access to tractors and other machinery. This is helping communities increase crop yields. HF has also been a catalyst for the introduction of the Desert Fridge low cost technology as a domestic facility to reduce crop waste by upto 40% as it uses just sunlight, clay pots and sand to store vegetables for a fortnight. Finally HF has also deployed processing equipment to process cous. In many of these areas, HF has also installed local water pumps.
In Jarra Soma, one hectare of land can now generate 150 bags of rice.
The impact has been an increase in crop yields, reduced waste and the ability to increase income through higher value products. This is just part of the journey for these communities from subsistence to commercial agriculture.
