Ouagadougou GOS Clinic
Gift Of Sight
For over a decade, Humanity First has been funding free cataract surgery from the eye clinic in Somgande, on the outskirts of Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso. Patients are referred from across the country, but also from neighbouring Mali and Niger.
Initially, eye tests are conducted to confirm the eye condition. In some cases, patients are offered medication and nutrition guidance to improve their health, but where appropriate, cataract surgery is offered. Dr Mahmood Bhunnoo, originally from Mauritius, has been driving this service for many years through the skills of local surgeons and their nursing teams. The process includes diagnostics, surgery, post-care and medication.
In over a decade, over 15,000 patients have had their eyesight restored.
