Sinematiali Pumps (Ivory Coast)
Water For Life
A group of villages near Sinematiali had seen many local hand-pumps go into disrepair. Over a period of a couple of years, the women and children had to walk a couple of miles to access poor quality water. In this period, 30 children under the age of 5 years died as a result, and many of the elderly suffered glaucoma, skin complaints and other water-borne illnesses. Humanity First worked village by village to clean and repair the boreholes and hand-pumps and restore access to water for these villages.
Having refurbished the water hand-pumps, the overall health of the community improved dramatically, especially for the most vulnerable members, and there were no further instances of under 5 year olds dying.
